Demi Moore is finally getting her flowers.

At the Golden Globes, the actress won for her Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her work in The Substance. She took the stage, visibly surprised, to deliver an emotional and inspiring speech. "I really wasn't expecting that," she started. "I'm just in shock right now."

Moore called the award her first ever for her acting work. "I've been doing this a long time, like over 45 years, and this is the first time I've ever won anything as an actor," she said.

Technically, Moore won the Robert Altman Award at the 2012 Independent Spirit Awards as a member of the ensemble of Margin Call, but this is her first individual win. She was previously nominated for a Golden Globe in 1997 for her work in If These Walls Could Talk and in 1991 for her performance in Ghost.

"I'm just so humbled and so grateful," she continued, then reiterating remarks she's shared since The Substance premiered at Cannes last summer. "Thirty years ago, I had a producer tell me I was a 'popcorn actress.' At that time, I made that mean that this wasn't something I was allowed to have. That I could do movies that were successful, that made a lot of money, but that I couldn't be acknowledged. I bought in and I believed that and that corroded me over time to the point where a few years ago, I thought maybe this was it. Maybe I was complete, Maybe I've done what I was supposed to do."

"As I was at kind of a low point," she continued, "this magical, bold, courageous, out of the box, absolutely bonkers script come across my desk called The Substance. And the universe told me that, 'You're not done.' I am so grateful to Coralie [Fargeat] for trusting me to step in and play this woman. For Margaret [Qualley] for being the other half of me."

Moore has received raves for her work in The Substance, in which she stars as Elisabeth Sparkle, a fitness star who despairs when her show is canceled due to her age. Seeking a way to feel better, she decides to try the titular black market drug, which splits her into the lithe, much younger Sue (Qualley), propelling her into a battle with herself that has unexpected side effects.

Writer-director Coralie Fargeat won Best Screenplay at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.

Moore ended with a bit of wisdom for anyone watching. "I'll just leave you with one thing that I think this movie is imparting," she said. "In those moments when we don't think we're smart enough or pretty enough or skinny enough or successful enough — or basically, just not enough — I had a woman say to me, 'Just know, you will never be enough. But you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick.'"

"And so," she concluded, "today, I celebrate this as a marker of my wholeness and of the love that is driving me. For the gift of doing something I love and being reminded that I do belong, thank you so much."
