Deadpool & Wolverine surpasses Joker as highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time

Deadpool and Wolverine came for and snatched the Joker's crown.

On top of being Marvel Studios' first R-rated entry in the MCU, Deadpool & Wolverine is now the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time with the latest round of box-office numbers. After 23 days playing in theaters, the film, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as the titular dysfunctional duo, earned a cumulative total of $1.086 billion worldwide, which surpassed previous title holder Joker at $1.0789 billion.

The film is still the second highest-grossing movie of the year so far, behind Inside Out 2's haul of $1.596 billion. But it's all good news for Disney, which released both titles.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige had some fun with the newly reached milestone by releasing playful notes from his desk. "Thanks for making Marvel Studios' first R-rated movie the biggest of all time," reads the first note on top of the pile. "It's fantastic to see that audiences are loving this movie as much as we all loved making it. All those conversations were worth it!"

Speaking of "those conversations," beneath the letter is another address about all the drug names banned from Deadpool & Wolverine.

"To whom it may concern, Per my most recent telefax, the use of the aforementioned illegal substance shall not be shown, reference, or implied in any Marvel Studios production," the comical note reads. "This restriction applies to any and all..." — one word is covered by Feige's more professional remarks — "...including but not limited to the following: Booker Sugar, Nose Beers, Bolivian Marching Powder, Forrest Bump, Snorp, Sniffy Lube, Nose Line, Nose Dive, A Low Blow, Blow and Arrow, Blow is Me, Blow Pop, Bumplestiltskin, Bumpty Dumpty, Dust Bowl, Dust Fund..."

Deadpool & Wolverine toyed with Robert Downey Jr. cameo: 'We have the Downey draft'

Of course, there's a scene in Deadpool & Wolverine in which Reynolds' Wade Wilson is listening to his roommate Blind Al (Leslie Uggams) run through the entire list of nicknames for cocaine, including many of the ones listed here.

Deadpool & Wolverine brought together Reynolds' Wade and Jackman's Logan for the first time on screen since 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. In addition to the hype surrounding this reunion and bringing Jackman out of Marvel retirement after 2017's Logan, the multiversal jaunt included some dynamite A-list cameos, including [REDACTED], [REDACTED], [REDACTED], and [REDACTED]. Reynolds and Jackman tell Entertainment Weekly that they are now looking to do another project together that's not Marvel related. The film's director Shawn Levy also says he's "even more confident" that "Marvel and I are not done with each other."
