Lizzie McGuire would have hooked up with Ethan Craft in the scrapped Disney+ revival

New details have emerged about the Lizzie McGuire revival that never was — including a particularly juicy tidbit about Lizzie's longtime crush.

In a recent TikTok video, Jonathan Hurwitz, a staff writer on the scrapped show, revealed that Hilary Duff's title character would have finally hooked up with her middle school crush Ethan Craft (played by Clayton Snyder). Twice! And that would have been followed by a suggestive sequence featuring animated Lizzie.

Noting that the first two episodes of the reboot were written and filmed, Hurwitz said episode 2 would have ended with Lizzie receiving a text from none other than Ethan, "and animated Lizzie faints." Though episode 3 wasn't filmed, there was a script for it: Lizzie wakes up in Ethan's bed, and animated Lizzie pops up with a to-do list that bears Ethan's name.

"She checks it off and says something like, 'Well, checked that box.' Dramatic pause. 'Twice,'" Hurwitz said, surmising that the scene might have proved too mature for Disney+ execs. (EW has reached out to Disney for comment on Hurwitz's remarks.)

And, condolences to those who would have wanted Lizzie to end up with one of her best pals in Gordo (Adam Lamberg), but Hurwitz revealed that the two wouldn't end up together in the reboot. Though the two would've kept in touch over the years, it would be revealed in episode 2 that the sneaky little brown-noser with a hidden agenda was happily engaged to another woman and expecting his first child.

The Lizzie McGuire revival, announced in August 2019, was supposed to follow Duff's beloved Disney Channel character as a soon-to-be 30-year-old interior designer living in New York. When she discovers that her fiancé has been cheating on her, a distraught Lizzie moves back home to California with her parents, where animated Lizzie has been waiting for her. Hallie Todd, Robert Carradine, and Jake Thomas were also on board to reprise their roles as the McGuire family.

Original series creator Terri Minsky returned as showrunner but exited in January 2020 due to creative differences. The final nail in the coffin came in December of that year, with Duff announcing that "the stars just didn’t align" and the project had been axed.

Duff and Minsky had also lobbied for Hulu to pick up the project to better reflect an adult Lizzie's life. "I'd be doing a disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30-year-old's journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating," Duff said at the time. "It would be a dream if Disney would let us move the show to Hulu, if they were interested, and I could bring this beloved character to life again." Alas, no such pickup came.
