Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni fall in toxic love in It Ends With Us first trailer

Colleen Hoover's particular brand of devastating romance novels is finally heading to the big screen with It Ends With Us, and the first trailer is officially here to rip your heart out all over again.

Blake Lively stars in the intense drama as Lily, a woman who overcomes a traumatic childhood with an abusive father to begin a new life in Boston. Things seem to be on track as she follows her dreams to open her own flower shop business, but when she falls in love with charming neurosurgeon Ryle (Justin Baldoni), she begins to realize his abusive behavior only continues the harmful cycle she's been trying to escape her whole life.

Lily and Ryle's toxic love is further complicated when Lily's childhood love Atlas (Brandon Sklenar) reappears in her life, upending everything she thought she knew and wanted. Ultimately, Lily must learn to rely on her own strength to make an impossible choice for her future.

As if the book didn't make you cry enough, the trailer threatens to start the waterworks all over again. And the choice to set the video to Taylor Swift’s "My Tears Ricochet" is almost too perfect. Watch the first trailer above now — but make sure to grab some tissues first.

It Ends With Us author addresses Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni casting controversy

Directed by Baldoni with a screenplay by Christy Hall, It Ends With Us is the first Hoover story to be adapted for the screen after it took BookTok by storm. The movie also stars Jenny Slate, Hasan Minhaj, and Amy Morton, and is executive produced by Lively and Baldoni alongside Hoover, Steve Sarowitz, Andrew Calof, and Andrea Ajemian.

Lively and Baldoni's castings as Lily and Ryle previously sparked controversy due to the age discrepancies between the actors and their characters (Lively is 36 while Lily is 23 in the book, and Baldoni is 40 and Ryle is supposed to be 30.) But Hoover told Today last year that the film adaptation provided an opportunity to remedy the ages she believes the characters should have been in the source material.

"Back when I wrote It Ends With Us, the new adult [genre] was very popular," Hoover said at the time. "You were writing college-age characters. That's what I was contracted to do. I made Lily very young. I didn't know that neurosurgeons went to school for 50 years. There's not a 20-something neurosurgeon. As I started making this movie, I'm like, 'We need to age them, because I messed up.' So that's my fault."

When it comes to Lively and Baldoni portraying her characters in the movie, Hoover is "extremely happy with the casting."

It Ends With Us hits theaters Aug. 9.
