It really seems like a Game of Thrones Aegon's Conquest spinoff is in the cards

It's no surprise that HBO is looking to continue to expand the world of Game of Thrones beyond House of the Dragon and the most recently announced Hedge Knight series. But while the Home Box Office network isn't commenting officially, it really...really... looks like the powers that be are flirting with the idea of Aegon's Conquest.

Last April, Variety reported that a show about Aegon Targaryen's conquest of Westeros was in early development. HBO did not comment at the time. Now months later, The Hollywood Reporter has also reported the concept, this time naming The Batman II screenwriter Mattson Tomlin as the one working on the treatment.

For a second time, HBO is not commenting. But it certainly seems like the notion isn't going away. EW also reached out to reps for Tomlin for comment.

Aegon I Targaryen was so-dubbed Aegon the Conqueror for his historic conquering of Westeros. He flew on dragonback from Old Valyria with his sister-wives Rhaenys and Viseyna and unified six of the Seven Kingdoms, sans Dorne.

It's interesting that we keep hearing about an Aegon spinoff because HBO's first spinoff, House of the Dragon, has already expanded on the lore surrounding Aegon.

According to King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine) in season 1, the real reason Aegon flew over to conquer Westeros is because he had a vision (a "dragon dream," if you will) that a devastating winter would sweep over the land from the North, bringing with it endless darkness. Aegon supposedly called this vision — an obvious premonition of the Night King and his White Walkers — "A Song of Ice and Fire," which is the name of author George R.R. Martin's original Game of Thrones book series.

House of the Dragon, showrun by Ryan Condal, is readying to release its second season this summer. The spinoff continues to chronicle the events surrounding the Dance of the Dragons, the civil war that broke out within the Targaryen Empire over the matter of succession. Emma D'Arcy, Olivia Cooke, and Matt Smith star.

The producers have previously indicated that House of the Dragon could easily segue into anthology territory after completing the Dance of the Dragons storyline. Who's to say this reported Aegon concept couldn't live under that same banner?

HBO has also greenlit A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, which will follow Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg, a century before the events of the original Game of Thrones. Martin also confirmed that three animated spinoff series are in contention, as well as a Jon Snow-focused show taking place after the events of the original series.
