I closed out my week in New York attending the SNL50 concert (the incredible musical lineup streaming on Peacock, not last Sunday's comedy celebration), as well as seeing Audra McDonald in Gyspy and the impressively stunt-y Death Becomes Her. I thought Sunset Boulevard's Nicole Scherzinger had the Tony on lock...but Audra may have my support now. Next up, catch our SAG Awards red carpet live show...with another Amazon-purchased suit on me. (Send help!) —Patrick Gomez, Editor-in-Chief

"The Monkey"

Theo James in 'The Monkey'.
Neon
Bring a poncho to the theater, because every seat is a splash zone with the amount of blood spray covering this Stephen King film adaptation. Far removed from the author's original short story, this Neon film is instead primarily pure comical madness taken directly from the mind of helmer Oz Perkins, who also directed last year's Nic Cage-led Longlegs. Imagine the most outlandish “accidental” death sequences, and then dial it up to 11. A true gem from the horror-comedy genre. —Nick Romano, Senior Writer

Created by Michelle Val Jean, Gates — the first new daytime drama in decades! — follows the lives and loves of the Duprees, a well-to-do Black family in a posh D.C. suburb. A soap opera in its purest form, and a well-timed celebration of Black excellence. —Kristen Baldwin, TV Critic

The Criterion Channel has a knack for shining a light on unsung directors, like the deserving Joan Micklin Silver. With films like Crossing Delancey and Hester Street, Silver crafted a distinctive voice as a chronicler of women's lives and Jewish immigrant communities. —Maureen Lee Lenker, Senior Writer
