Ke Huy Quan reflects on reuniting with Goonies costars on Love Hurts set: 'I felt like I was a kid again'

Ke Huy Quan got the Goonies gang back together on the set of his next movie.

The Everything Everywhere All at Once star reunited with Sean Astin on his forthcoming action film Love Hurts. The film follows Quan's character Marvin, a former hitman who now works alongside Astin's character Cliff as a real estate agent. The movie will release in February 2025 — 40 years after Quan and Astin previously starred together as Data and Mikey in The Goonies.

Quan said that the producers had the original idea to cast Astin as his boss in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "We didn’t really know who would play Cliff, and we were thinking about many different names," Quan remembered. "And when I heard one of the names, I said, 'Oh my God, we have to make that happen!'"

Ke Huy Quan says Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, other Goonies costars congratulated him on Oscar win

The Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom actor contacted his former costar after producers began discussions with Astin. "I actually texted Sean after production reached out to him, and I said, 'Hey, buddy, it’s been 40 years since we’ve shared the screen together. It would be incredible to be able to do it again,'" he recalled. "And he didn’t respond!"

Astin opted to maximize his friend's anticipation. "He didn’t respond to me, but he responded by saying yes to production and letting me find out about it that way," Quan explained. "So it was such a lovely surprise, and I think he was trying to keep the suspense. I was just waiting in anticipation, and then the producer called me and said, 'Sean is in!' And I said, 'Oh my gosh, that’s incredible!’"

Quan and Astin weren't the only Goonies on set when shooting finally arrived. "When we did our scenes together, Jeff Cohen came to visit, so there were three Goonies together," Quan said. Cohen, who played Chunk in the 1985 classic, now works as an entertainment lawyer, and counts Quan as one of his clients.

"We talked, and it was just incredible," Quan said of the Goonies reunion. "All of a sudden, I felt like I was a kid again. It didn’t feel like we were all grown-up. It felt like it did as kids on the set of The Goonies. And that’s also what it felt like when I did my scenes with Sean. The camera, the crew and everybody just disappeared, and I was looking at Mikey again and I believe he was looking at Data again. So it was one of the happiest shoot days that I’ve ever had."

The Goonies stars Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton, and Joe Pantoliano shut down sequel rumors

Despite persistent rumors, there are no immediate plans for a Goonies sequel. Although Astin posted a photo of a fan-made poster for a follow-up to the coming-of-age adventure film earlier this year, his costars quickly clarified that a second movie isn't happening. "People, there is no Goonies 2 script," Martha Plimpton wrote on Instagram. "There is no one 'attached,' Spielberg is not directing, it's not real." Similarly, Corey Feldman said that he had 'no info that a sequel is in the works' on social media.

Quan told Entertainment Weekly that it was important that he perform Love Hurts' elaborate fight choreography himself. "I was adamant about this. I told our producers, ‘You have to let me do all the fights myself,'" he said. "And this is without even knowing if I could do it or not!"

Quan also reiterated his surprise at headlining a Hollywood action movie at this point in this career. "I never thought I would ever get to be number one on a call sheet," he said. "Every time I’d go watch an action movie, whether it be Schwarzenegger or Stallone or Seagal or Statham, I would fantasize about being in their shoes, but it only existed in my fantasy. What an incredible step forward."

Love Hurts debuts in theaters on Feb. 7, 2025.
