A sequel to The Goonies is officially in the works at Warner Bros., a representative from the studio confirmed to Entertainment Weekly on Friday.
Potsy Ponciroli (Old Henry, Still the King) is writing the screenplay. Chris Columbus, who wrote the original Goonies and went on to helm the first two Home Alone and Harry Potter movies, is producing the film.
Steven Spielberg, who wrote the story for and executive-produced the original 1985 film, is also producing alongside his Amblin Entertainment colleagues Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario.

Lauren Shuler Donner, the producer who oversaw the X-Men franchise and was married to original Goonies director Richard Donner until his 2021 death, is executive-producing the project. No director is attached to the movie yet.
The Goonies followed a group of Oregonian kids who raced against the menacing Fratelli family to find pirate treasure and save their houses from foreclosure. Fans have long requested (and speculated about) a sequel, but this is the first time a follow-up project has officially gained momentum in decades.
