Ke Huy Quan is looking back on an endearing moment with costar Harrison Ford on the set of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Breaking down some of his favorite cinematic action scenes with Entertainment Weekly to promote his new action rom-com Love Hurts, the star lists the high-octane mine cart chase in the 1984 action adventure — which he filmed at just 12 — as his first pick.

Quan, now 53, also recalls Ford consoling him while filming that frightening sequence, which sees Ford's titular explorer and Quan's sidekick character, Short Round, chart an escape from the Temple of Doom. "When we shot this sequence, I was so scared," shares Quan. "And I cried. I remember Harrison Ford kneeling down in front of me and asking me if I was okay."

Continues Quan, "He said, and I'll never forget this, 'Ke, I want you to remember, I will never hurt you.' When he said that, oh my gosh, it just made me love him so much more. Here is Indiana Jones telling me that he's gonna take care of me."

The actor credits the film, which marked his first Hollywood role, for his love of the action genre. "I remember watching it for the first time at our premiere, seeing it put together with sound effects and music for the first time," recalls Quan. "I was blown away by all of it. I was only 13 then. It made me fall in love with action."

Quan broke out as a child actor in the '80s for his work in Indiana Jones and The Goonies. He stepped away from acting in his early 20s to attend film school due to the scarcity of substantial roles. "Opportunities for Asian actors at that time were just few and far between," Quan told EW in 2022. After graduation, he worked behind the camera, including as a stunt coordinator and assistant director alongside Wong Kar-wai.

Quan staged a triumphant comeback with 2022's Everything Everywhere All At Once — and swept awards season, winning his first Academy Award and Golden Globe. In a full circle moment, it was Ford who presented the Best Picture win to EEAO at the 2023 Oscars.

Ke Huy Quan reveals backstory to Indiana Jones reunion with Harrison Ford: 'Are you Short Round?'

A few months prior, the duo had reunited at the D23 Expo. "We're in this green room with so many actors, producers, and directors, and the person who was assigned to assist me said, 'Harrison Ford is right outside the green room. Would you want to go say hi?'" Quan previously recalled to The New York Times. "And as I walk close, my heart is pounding. I'm thinking, 'Is he gonna recognize me? The last time he saw me, I was a little kid.'"

As Quan neared his former costar, "he turns and points his finger at me, and he has that classic, famous, grumpy Harrison Ford look," he recalled. "I go, 'Oh my gosh, he probably thinks I'm a fan, and he's gonna tell me to not come near him.' But he looks and points at me and says, 'Are you Short Round?' Immediately, I was transported back to 1984, when I was a little kid, and I said, 'Yes, Indy.' And he said, 'Come here,' and gave me a big hug."
