Amid news that Catholic leader Pope Francis is in critical condition with early kidney failure and pneumonia, Isabella Rossellini — star of the papal drama Conclave — wished the religious figure well as she and the film's cast introduced the movie on stage at Sunday night's 2025 SAG Awards.
Rossellini, who was recently nominated for an Oscar for her role in the film that follows the dramatic selection of a new pope in the film's fictional world, kicked off the ensemble cast's introduction of the project by shifting focus to Pope Francis' condition.
"First of all, we would like to wish Pope Francis a quick recovery," Rossellini said as the audience in the room applauded.

Rossellini's message came after the Vatican reported that, though in critical condition, the 88-year-old remained alert, responsive, and attended Sunday mass, the Associated Press reported, in addition to noting that Pope Francis had received "high flows of supplemental oxygen" during his treatment.
At the SAG Awards, the actress continued, telling the audience that Conclave's title stands for "the secret meeting where the new pope is elected," which "happens behind the secret world of the Vatican."

Ralph Fiennes, who also scored Oscar and SAG nominations for his performance in the movie, continued: "A papal election turns into a battleground for competing agendas and egos, leaving no candidate safe from — I don't know if I say inquiry or inquiry."
John Lithgow also spoke, joking: "Conclave takes a look at the complex people behind the closed doors of an age-old institution and the weight of their decisions. And I do mean weight, because those costumes must've weighed about 500 pounds. That's not even counting the jewelry, which, I'm forced to confess, I stole!"

The cast of Conclave isn't Pope Francis' only fanbase in Hollywood; The View moderator and Oscar-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg revealed in May 2024 that she offered Pope Francis a role in her long-gestating sequel Sister Act 3 during a trip to the Vatican.
